5 Safe and Fun End of Summer Family Activities

The back to school days are upon us, but there’s still time for some last minute end of summer family activities. Obviously, making memories doesn’t need to stop once autumn arrives. But while the kids are home, it’s a perfect time to soak up some eleventh hour fun. We’ve listed five ideas that balance fun and safety for the whole family.

1. Backyard Camping Adventure

You don’t need to hike deep into the woods for a great camping experience. Just head to your own back yard! It’s a terrific way to introduce younger children to the idea of camping, while in a controlled environment.

There you can pitch a tent, roll out the sleeping bags, and pack some easy-to-make camping snacks. Plus, having the house just a few steps away is convenient in case anyone needs to use the bathroom or the weather takes a turn.

Setting up a backyard camping adventure offers all the excitement of camping, like making s’mores, stargazing, and telling spooky stories—without the risks of a remote campsite. Just remember the rules of fire safety. Keep a fire extinguisher or a bucket of water nearby, and always supervise children around the flames.

2. Beach Day with Safety in Mind

A day at the beach is a no-brainer for summer fun. It’s always just a car-ride away. That said, remember to prioritize water safety. As the season comes to an end, the crowds usually start to thin. Having all that extra space may be tempting to let your guard down. For this reason, active supervision is key.

Make sure to choose a beach that has lifeguards on duty. Also, don’t forget to bring properly fitted U.S. Coast Guard approved life jackets, for the children. This is especially true if they aren’t strong swimmers. To avoid sunburn, remember the sunscreen and to drink plenty of water.

3. Cycling Around the Neighborhood

Riding bikes together as a family is a great safe and fun end of summer family activity. Cycling is a fantastic way to get some exercise, explore your neighborhood, and enjoy the final days of summer. It’s a family-friendly activity that can be adapted to different skill levels, making it perfect for parents and kids alike.

Just make sure you are all wearing your helmets before heading out the door. After all, no one wants to end summer vacation with a concussionStick to a route that avoids heavy traffic and busy streets. Make sure younger children understand the rules of the road, such as looking both ways before crossing the street and signaling turns.

4. Outdoor Movie Night

An outdoor movie night is a fun and relaxing way to spend time with family without leaving your backyard. All you need is a projector, a screen (or even just a white sheet should work!), and some comfy seating.

This activity is perfect for winding down as the evening temperatures cool. It's always a hit with kids and adults alike. Choose a family-friendly movie that everyone can enjoy.

One thing to keep in mind is that mosquitos are more active at night, so make sure to have some bug spray or mosquito repellant patches handy!

5. End of Summer Activities: Picnic in the Park

Wrapping up the list of end of summer family activities is another classic—a picnic in the park. This time-honored tradition is simple yet enjoyable, allowing families to relax in a natural setting and share a meal. Choose a park with plenty of open space, so kids can run around and play games while parents keep an eye on them.

When planning your picnic, pack foods that are easy to transport and less likely to spoil in the heat. Bring plenty of water to stay hydrated. Finally, consider packing a small first aid kit in case of minor scrapes or tumbles.

Here’s to a safe and happy end of the season to everyone. Now get out there and seize the last days of summer!
